commissioning artwork

practical issues

Practical criteria should include the following:

Brief: What do you want the artist to make, and why?

Budget: This includes not only the final cost of making the item but may also take account of travel expenses, designing costs, installation and transportation.

Faculty: This should be sought as early as possible after the brief and budget has been agreed.

Schedule: Once the brief has been agreed, dates should be proposed for the stages, for example: design stage, production time, delivery, installation, formal opening.

Maintenance: Consider the durability and/or fragility of the piece and whether its value requires extra insurance or security measures.
