commissioning artwork

The Diocesan Advisory Committee and new works of art

One of the functions of the DAC is to advise the Diocesan Chancellor on the suitability of new works of art. Any commissioned piece should be in keeping with the ethos of the church and be of a high standard materially and artistically. The work should be compatible with, and worthy of, a Christian setting and Anglican beliefs.

If you are considering an art commission for your church it is advisable to inform the DAC in the early stages. You should assume in the first instance that a faculty will be required, regardless of the size of the piece or its placement. The DAC will be able to offer advice and/or confirmation on the suitability of the new work. There may be Diocesan guidelines which need to be followed. If the new work is a replacement for an existing item the DAC will need as much information as possible about what is being replaced. Remember that disposal of existing items will also need permission.

When the brief and budget have been agreed with the commissioned artist and the PCC, the DAC should be approached.
