Guide to Commissioning for Artists
Thoroughly research the project/church. Ask questions like:
- How old is it?
- Who is the patron saint?
- Are there any significant events associated with it?
- What is the dominant architectural style?
- What part of the country is it in?
- What type of area - city centre, suburban, market town, rural?
- What is the building material?
- Are there any other commissioned pieces, either historical or contemporary in the church?
- What is the worship style?
- Is the congregation predominantly young with children, or older?
- Is the church also used for another purpose such as childcare or outreach and community?
- What are the needs of the community?
- Is the church listed?
- If necessary, research the liturgy, ritual and iconography related to the church and the commission.
- Draft the design proposals and the outline costs
- Work samples/models into a finished state for approval
- Artwork created according to the brief already agreed.
- Arrange delivery and installation
- At each stage of the project there should be time set aside for consultation with the client.
